Three U.S. boats advanced to the medal races on Thursday at the 2021 World Rowing Coastal Championships in Oeiras, Portugal. The Great Miami Rowing Center women's coxed quadruple sculls crew and two of the U.S. women's solo entries reached the A finals during today's heats.
Conditions were rowable but challenging, with plenty of crews getting a taste of the Atlantic Ocean.
Racing in the first heat of the women's coxed quadruple sculls, Great Miami Rowing Center's Bennett Rossell, Elizabeth Hinley, Brooke Downes, Cassidy Norton and Hannah Huppi clocked the fourth fastest time to advance to the medal race on Saturday. The crew covered the course in a 19:52.87. Ukraine's ZCU National Guard won the race in an 18:33.94.
In the second heat of the women's coxed quad, Bair Island Aquatic Center's Isabella Schiros, Amanda Hawkins, Liliana Retelny, Hannah Wayment-Steele and Athena Bradley finished 14th and will now race in the B final on Friday. Spain's R.C. Mediterraneo De Malaga won the race in a 19:33.18. Great Britain's UL Tyrian Club, which features multiple-time U.S. National Team members, Molly Bruggeman and Vicky Opitz, finished second.
In the first heat of the women's solo event, Park City Rowing Academy's Dayna Deuter finished eighth, advancing to the A final. Deuter completed the course in a time of 26:37.16. Jessica Berra, representing France's Hendaye Endaika, won the race in a 23:13.08. In the second heat, Wayment-Steele claimed the last qualifying spot in the medal race, finishing 10th - just ahead of Newportt Aquatic Center's Christine Rubino. Racing in her second event of the day, Wayment-Steele clocked a 27:26.33 to earn a spot in Saturday's A final. Rubino finished 11th in a 28:14.13 and will race in tomorrow's B final. Italy's Stefania Gobbi won the race in a 23:06.22, ahead of Tunisia's Khadija Krimi.
Representing New Orleans Rowing Club, John Huppi and John Olbrys finished 10th in the second heat of the men's double sculls. Huppi and Olbrys, who were part of the mixed coxed quadruple sculls crew that won a bronze medal this past weekend at the 2021 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals, now will race in the B final on Friday. Sweden's Stocholm/Hoganas boat dominated the race, winning in an 18:59.71, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of Great Britain's Bexhill & Deal Rowing Club.
Three U.S. boats will hit the water for the first time on Friday. Rossell will join Chris Bak, Ben Booth, Marc Oria, and Kory Rogers in the men's coxed quadruple sculls event. Hillary Saeger, a seven-time, flat-water U.S. National Team member, will be racing with Erin Roberts, a 2015 National Team member, in the women's double sculls, while Luke Rein and Bridget Schodorf will race in the mixed double sculls.
Friday's racing gets underway at 8:30 a.m. local time with the remaining heats, with the first set of B finals being held Friday afternoon. The A finals and the remaining B finals will be held Saturday.
In total, more than 800 competitors in 342 boats from 34 countries are scheduled to compete in Portugal.
